How to watch a CS2 demo from another player's POV

While a CS2 demo plays, click to cycle through players, or type spec_player with a name or slot in the console to jump straight to one. Press Space to switch the camera between first person, third person and free cam.

UPDATED

01Spectate a specific player

  1. Open the demo: download it from Watch → Your Matches and watch it from there, or load it with playdemo in the console.
  2. Click to cycle through players until you're on the one you want.
  3. To go straight to someone, open the console (~) and type spec_player followed by their name or slot. spec_next and spec_prev step through players in order.
CONSOLE
spec_player <name or slot>
spec_next
spec_prev

The demo UI (Shift+F2 or demoui) also shows the players next to the timeline, round selector and speed controls, which is handy when you're switching between people a lot. spec_mode sets the spectator mode from the console.

The console has to be enabled first: Settings → Game → Enable Developer Console. Can't find the demo file? See where CS2 demos are saved.

02Use free cam

Press Space to cycle camera modes. Common setups go first person, third person, then free cam. In free cam, move with WASD. It's how you watch a retake from above or line up an angle nobody in the server actually had. To get back into a player's eyes, cycle with Space again or use spec_player.

Flying around at full speed is hard. Slow the demo down, or pause it, while you position the camera:

demo_timescale 1

03See your kill from the enemy's POV

Yes. Matchmaking demos are GOTV demos Valve records on its servers, and you can spectate any player in them, so you can rewatch your frag from the side of the guy you killed. It's the best way to see how your crosshair placement or timing looked from their screen.

  1. Skip to the round with the round selector in the demo UI (Shift+F2).
  2. A few seconds before the fight, run demo_marktick so you can come back to that moment.
  3. Watch it from your own POV first.
  4. Run demo_gotomark, switch to the player you killed with spec_player or by clicking through players, and watch it again.
  5. Repeat for each enemy in the play.

Doing that for a 4K and then capturing each angle as video is a lot of work. killcam.gg Pro has a Reverse angle director that does it for you: it shows the main clip, then each killed enemy's own POV, clipped on our servers from Valve's copy of the demo. See pricing for what Pro includes.

04Find the round first

The slow part isn't switching POV; it's finding the round. killcam.gg's match page lists Your kills best first, one row per round with a badge (ACE, 1vN, 4K) and the round number, so you know where to jump before you open the demo. More in how to find an ace in a CS2 demo.

Don't sit on it too long. Valve keeps matchmaking demos for a limited time, typically a few weeks at most, and an expired demo can't be recovered. See why a CS2 demo expires.
