How to save a CS2 clip after you forgot to record
If no recorder was running, the match demo is your copy of the play: Valve records every matchmaking game server-side. Download it from Watch → Your Matches and record the playback, or let killcam.gg clip it straight from Valve's demo. Do it soon, because the demo only stays up for a limited time.
01Check your background recorder first
Background recorders only capture while they're running. If one was already on during the match, the play might be sitting in its buffer:
- Steam Game Recording: if Settings → Game Recording was set to "Record in background", open the Steam overlay and clip from the rolling buffer. In manual mode it only recorded if you hit the hotkey.
- NVIDIA or AMD instant replay: only has the play if it was enabled during the match.
- Xbox Game Bar: "record what happened" only works if it was already on.
A rolling buffer keeps the most recent stretch and replaces older footage as it goes, so check it before you play on. If nothing was on, nothing was captured on your PC. The demo is the only source left.
02The demo has the whole match
Valve matchmaking (Premier, Competitive, Wingman) records a GOTV demo of every match on its servers. It holds every round from every player, so your play is in there even though you weren't recording. CS2 doesn't save it to your PC by itself, though: you have to download it.
- In CS2 open Watch → Your Matches and hit download on the match. It lists your last 8 matches.
- Or use Steam's website: your Steam profile → Games → Counter-Strike 2 → Personal Game Data, then the "Download GOTV Replay" link on the match. That gives you a compressed
.dem.bz2to extract. - Watch it from Your Matches, open
demoui(Shift+F2) and jump to the round with the play. - Spectate yourself with
spec_player, setcl_draw_only_deathnotices 1for a clean view, and screen-record the round.
The full walkthrough, commands and trimming included, is in how to turn a CS2 demo into an MP4.
03Let killcam.gg clip it from the demo
killcam.gg reads the match demo from Valve and clips your plays on our servers. Nothing has to be running on your PC, not during the match and not after.
- Sign in through Steam and link your match history: paste your game authentication code and a share code (where to find them).
- To catch up on recent games, paste the share code of the oldest match in Watch → Your Matches as your starting share code. Every match after it gets pulled.
- Only need one match? Use Add a match by share code.
- Open the match. Your kills lists one row per round where you got a kill, best first, with a badge (ACE, 1vN, 4K) and the round number.
Free clips your top play from every match automatically. If the play you forgot isn't your top one, Pro lets you open the match, pick the kill and hit Clip it. Free players can also earn Pro clips by repping killcam.gg in their Steam name or clan tag (rewards).
04How long you have
Valve doesn't publish a fixed retention window. Reports range from about a week up to roughly a month, so treat it as a few weeks at most and grab the demo the same day if you can.
- Once Valve drops a demo, it can't be recovered. killcam.gg shows "Valve no longer has this demo" and there's nothing left to clip.
- Your Matches only lists your last 8 matches, so keep playing and an older match drops off that list.
- A demo you've downloaded doesn't expire, but after big CS2 updates older demos can stop playing.
Questions this guide answers
Can you clip CS2 without recording?
Yes. Valve keeps a demo of every matchmaking game for a limited time, so you can clip a play from it after the match: play it back and screen-record it, or let killcam.gg clip it with nothing installed.
Can Steam or NVIDIA save a CS2 clip after the fact?
Only if they were already running. Steam Game Recording in background mode, NVIDIA or AMD instant replay and Xbox Game Bar only keep footage while they're on. If nothing was on, the match demo is the only source. More ↑
How long do I have to save a play from an old match?
As long as Valve still has the demo, which is typically a few weeks at most. Valve doesn't publish a fixed window and expired demos can't be recovered, so download or clip it soon. More ↑
